The Cutthroat Module is the CED’s newest addition. we have initially developed the module with the Lahontan cutthroat trout, listed at ‘Threatened’ under the Endangered Species Act. Like the Sagebrush and Gunnison modules before it, the Cutthroat module is designed to capture conservation efforts to preserve the species and its habitat.
The Cutthroat Module has been enhanced to capture additional information including:
· Demographic information (i.e. the number of fish counted at specific locations and times)
· Habitat monitoring (i.e. the vegetation and stream condition)
· Genetic information
· Population narratives (anything unusual or noteworthy that has happened to a population that does not fit into a data collection section).
This information provides a more complete picture of the species and will allow members to determine the extent to which conservation efforts are effective.
The Cutthroat Module is capable of capturing conservation and restoration efforts that are (1) spatially explicit , such as conifer removals, conservation easements, or post-fire restoration, or (2) spatially obscure, such as fire suppression plans, powerline burials, or fence markings.
For spatially explicit efforts, users upload the exact spatial boundary of the effort.
For spatially obscure efforts, we have created population reporting units (PRUs).
Detailed habitat data is currently being captured by the USGS. Additional habitat data in any form can be stored in the habitat narrative section.
Demographic data (fish counts) from across the Cutthroat Trout’s range are captured by field technicians and entered into a single database before being uploaded into the Module.
Older demographic data, where only summary information exists, can still be entered via the summary only demographic page. While the details of the genetics page are still being determined, the site
will contain information on the genetic diversity of each Lahontan population.
Data within the Module captures information on basic questions related to the planning and implementation of the effort including:
· "Who"- the agency and collaborators that conducted the and the landowners where the effort to place.
· “What” – The type of effort or data collection being conducted.
· “Where” – the spatially explicit or spatially obscure spatial footprint of the effort or data collection event.
· “When” – The start and end date of the effort or data collection event.
· “Why” – The threats to the cutthroat trout habitat that are being addressed and the objectives the user hopes to accomplish for this effort.
· “How” – This includes both the methods that a team used to accomplish the effort and how successful the initial implementation of the effort was.
Many efforts in cutthroat trout habitat can take years to be fully effective, so long-term success is difficult to ascertain. By combining conservation effort information with habitat,
demographic, and genetic data across agencies, we can paint a more complete picture of the Lahontan cutthroat trout populations.
